The Death Road by Mountain Bike: An Epic Adventure in the Bolivian Yungas

The road from La Paz to Coroico has earned its western or Tarantino movie name due to the sheer precipices that line it and its degree of danger: narrow and winding, the annual rains make the route often perilous.

Suspended between the peaks of the Andes and the lush tropical vegetation of the Yungas, the Death Road offers an unrivalled adventure experience for thrill-seekers.

Legend and history

The Route de la Mort, also known as the "Camino de la Muerte", was once considered the most dangerous road in the world due to its steep bends, vertiginous cliffs and unpredictable weather conditions. Built in the 1930s by Paraguayan prisoners, the Death Road links the city of La Paz to the Yungas region, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

A thrilling adventure

This vertiginous descent nevertheless allows us to appreciate the gradual change in vegetation: from the high peaks of the Andes, we gradually move on to high jungle vegetation, including coffee and exotic fruit plantations. A real plunge into the heart of the Yungas valleys!

But fortunately for you (and for us), a new road has been cleared to make the connection with Coroico more fluid.

The road of death remains open to adventurers who, from the top of their mountain bikes, want to reach the verdant lower valleys, verging on the abyss at every turn.
